Master of Science in Engineering (MSE)

Type:
Graduate
Degree:
M.S.
Description:

The master of science in engineering (MS-ENGR) is designed to advance the
knowledge of students in areas differing from those in which they received
their bachelor’s degree. The program is particularly intended for students
with bachelor’s degrees in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science
or engineering who are making a change of discipline or wanting to
develop expertise in an engineering area, often one that is of emerging importance
or interdisciplinary in nature. The program combines a solid background
in an area of engineering with a distinctly personal specialization.
It enables the student to focus on a particular area of engineering, while
providing breadth through its flexible minor or technical elective requirement
addressing the student’s specific interests.

Total Credit Hours:
45qrt. hrs.
Other Requirements:

ADMISSION TO THE MS (ENGR) PROGRAM
A bachelor of science degree in engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics or computer science is required for admission to the MS (ENGR) program. Students may also be required to complete prerequisite undergraduate courses; such courses are not considered part of the 45-credit-hour requirement for the degree. Students whose undergraduate degree is not in engineering are not eligible for a graduate teaching assistantship (GTA) upon entry.

All students must have completed at least the following minimum course requirements:
• One year of college level physics of a level that leads to further study in physics
• A minor in mathematics, which must include a year of calculus and a course in differential equations
• Be competent in computer programming

Depending upon the student’s area of interest and focus, other prerequisite courses that may not apply to the 45-credit-hour requirement may also be required. These are determined by the student’s declared interest and previous background. The declared interest is therefore an essential part of the graduate application. Students may be admitted provisionally while they take the appropriate prerequisite courses.
