Advising
Entering First-Year students all have Faculty Mentors under the First-Year Seminar program. These faculty members assist students in adjusting to the university setting and provide academic advising. Even though most of these Faculty Mentors are not Engineering Advisors, student registration will be monitored to determine if the student is registering for correct courses during the first year.
If the student decides on engineering after the start of autumn quarter, then the student must come to one of the Engineering Associate Chairs to process a change of major. Transfer students must also come first to an Associate Chair of the appropriate department to obtain proper advice on courses.
At the beginning of each advising period, the advisor receives individual advising material, consisting of a Course Request Form (used for recording the following quarter’s courses). Each student must obtain this from the advisor in order to pre-register for the following quarter. If the student is unsure who their advisor is, he/she should contact one of the Engineering Departments to find out the name of the advisor or find out through myWeb.
Upon completion of the first-year engineering curriculum, students are assigned to an advisor who has them in an engineering course during the second year. This is the year in which the student should explore the engineering opportunities available, and make a decision on which engineering discipline best fits his or her individual interests and abilities.
At the end of the second year, once the decision on a specific program (BSCPE, BSEE, BSME) has been made, an advisor from that program will be assigned; this is the student’s advisor for the remainder of the program.
Students admitted into the coordinated programs with the Daniels College of Business (DCB) will have a co-advisor from DCB.
A student should feel free to contact the advisor throughout the year to discuss any areas of interest or concern. We pride ourselves on having one of the best academic advising systems at the University of Denver.
